Ref: Garton 41 state ii/ii
A rich impression proof impression on wove paper with some lightstaining where previously mounted.
Stamped with the initials, RT. This signifying an impression remaining in the artist's studio after his death in 1988.
This etching was a commissioned frontispiece for the limited edition of Gray's Elegy written in a Country Churchyard. The image relates to the verse:
Beneath those rugged elms, that yew-tree's shade,
Where heaves the turf in many a mould'ring heap,
Each in his narrow cell for ever laid,
The rude Forefathers of the hamlet sleep.
