Carey, Frances and Griffiths, Antony, Avant-Garde British Printmaking 1914-60 British Museum Publications Ltd, London,1990,  p. 100, This is the most abstract composition that Hughes-Stanton ever made and betrays a conscious determination to move away from the organic shapes that had dominated his earlier prints. He uses an extraordinary variety of methods of laying wood-engraved lines in order to create different textures and a range of grey tones.
