The scene depicts the Book Room at Sotheby's, Wellington Street, London. Some of the characters can be identified: the auctioneer, Grose Hodge, the sales clerk, Mr. Snowdon and on the left with the beard, Alphonse Legros, Strang's etching teacher at the Slade School of Art.
